Nomenclature: Our Words Mean a Lot

“I didn’t understand a word you just said.”

That’s something we never want to hear.

Desert Fuels operates in an industry known for obfuscation. Or, as the rest of the world would put it, “notorious for needlessly using strange, little-known words (“obfuscation?!?”) to keep folks in the dark about what their industry is all about.” And remaining distant and mysterious suits the fuel industry just fine.

But Not Us!

Desert Fuels is all about demystifying and modernizing an archaic industry whose ability to communicate clearly with normal people has long been running on fumes.

Just because oil comes from prehistoric creatures buried deep in the earth millions of years ago, doesn’t mean the industry that produces and supplies it today has to operate like a dinosaur. Particularly when it comes to relating to the people, companies, and organizations depending on it to power their world.

Though we confess to also having our own unique way of describing who we are, what we do, and how we do it–we want people to understand what we’re all about.

Translation: Desert Fuels-speak is now free to the masses! We hope the glossary below communicates how seriously we take what we do, both for the customers we serve and the industry we represent (even if some of this sounds a bit tongue-in-cheek.)

Desert Fuels’ Definitions & Acronyms

(But not nearly as many as our government friends)

WMUD – What Makes Us Different (other than our incredible people and prices.)

We’re determined to transform the old-school fuel industry with new, better, and more efficient ways of buying and selling fuel and serving our customers who keep it flowing. We’re “Refreshingly Different” and are “Changing Everything” by “Simplifying the Complex” and “Opening the Closed Doors” of an obscure industry. You get the picture.

Tier 1, 2, and 3 Fuel Supplier Status (T1, T2, T3): This is how we measure our market effectiveness in a given geographical region. It describes our forward progression in the areas we serve:

  • Tier 1 = Premier Supplier: Where Desert Fuels purchases fuel from every major refiner and supplier, at both spot and contract prices, and is capable of selling it to anyone who buys at spot or contract pricing, or both. Basically, Tier 1 is an area where all of the infrastructure is in place for Desert Fuels to thrive, providing premier customer service and the most competitive fuel prices.
  • Tier 2 = Partial Supplier: Where Desert Fuels purchases and sells fuel, while we grow the infrastructure of customers, suppliers, and transports that will propel us to be a Tier 1 Premier Supplier.
  • Tier 3 = Pioneer Supplier: Where Desert Fuels is breaking into a region by establishing the relationships upon which the critical infrastructure will be built to maintain a robust industry presence and impact, furthering our goal to be a top-shelf IWFS, “Independent Wholesale Fuel Supplier” (more below).

Account Application: Not your typical “credit application.” The big credit-reporting companies (Equifax, Experian, Trans Union, and Dun & Bradstreet) may try to accurately peg credit worthiness, but the mounds of information they depend upon are often incomplete or incorrect, or both. We’re more interested in making customers, not sales. Those will come. Our primary goal is to build great relationships with our customers, so we can grow together over the long-haul. ACH (Automated Clearing House): Synonymous with EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer.) This is our preferred method of payment, and assures buyers will have the highest number of payment days for their particular account. Slower payment methods typically reduce the number of available payment days.

Crexability: A term coined by our Dedicated Customer Account Managers that sums up both the creativity and flexibility they bring to solving some of the logistical challenges they face while serving our customers. It’s that kind of “outside the tank” (OTT) thinking that pushes us to find ways to get the job done, not excuses why we can’t.

Customer Account Manager (CAM): These are the guys at Desert Fuels who do it all. They are also known by other names: Dispatcher, Fuel Industry Savant, Fuel Pricing Genius, “Mr. I make it happen when others can’t.” Their responsibility is to do one thing and do it very well: To give our customers uncompromising service! They are our dedicated point of contact, a “one-stop-shop,” from terminal to tank, and just out-of-their-minds-crazy about being there to help, 24/7/365 (and leap years too.)

Customer First (CF): We see our customers as partners and are genuinely interested in their success before ours because it will lead to success for both of us.

Fixed-Forward Contract (FFC): One of the ways we make fuel-buying simple and affordable. Fixed-Forward is a type of contract we recommend to customers who need to meet an intermediate or longer range budget goal, for anywhere from one month to a year. In the right situation, a Fixed-Forward arrangement can be one of the smartest business decisions a customer will make in an entire budget year. Ridiculous Follow-Through (RFT): Translation: the way our Customer Account Managers (CAMs) tend to over-communicate, keeping our customers informed in real-time should the unexpected try to interfere with their orders. (Our CAMs have also been known to call customers out of the blue, just to see if everything’s OK, and offer to help if it’s not. (Isn’t that just ridiculous?!)
